Описание: We begin with an analysis of the significance of the Macartney Mission to Beijing in 1793 and what the response of the Qianlong emperor can tell us about the relative power imbalance between Britain and China in the late 18th century. We then compare this response to the dramatic realignment of power relations that occurred after the Industrial Revolution in Europe, and how Britain and other European powers used this advantage to induce increasingly severe political, economic, and eventually cultural crises throughout the Qing Empire. It concludes with a closer look at the various attempts at reform during the last fifteen years of the dynasty, with a focus on the role of the New Armies in precipitating the abdication of the imperial court in 1912.
