Haymarket railway station is a major train station located in the west end of Edinburgh, Scotland. It is the second-largest station in the city after Waverley and serves as an important gateway for passengers traveling to and from the west of Edinburgh, as well as destinations across Scotland and northern England.
Opened in 1842, the station has a rich history and has undergone several modern refurbishments to improve accessibility and passenger facilities. Today, it is a busy commuter hub, offering connections to Glasgow, Stirling, Inverness, Aberdeen, and the wider UK rail network. Its location near Murrayfield Stadium and business districts also makes it a key stop for both daily commuters and visitors.
The Edinburgh to Glasgow Main Line is Scotland’s busiest intercity railway, linking the country’s two largest cities over a distance of about 47 miles (76 km). Opened in 1842, it was one of the earliest main lines in Britain and has played a central role in Scotland’s transport network ever since. The route connects Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Queen Street stations, with key stops including Haymarket, Falkirk High, and Croy. It underwent major modernization in recent years, including electrification completed in 2017, which reduced journey times and allowed faster, greener electric trains to run. Today, the line carries millions of passengers annually, providing frequent services for commuters, business travelers, and tourists, and remains a vital link between the cultural and economic hubs of Edinburgh and Glasgow.
