To write the structure for the organic molecule 3-Methyl-1-butanol (also called isopentyl alcohol, isopentanol, or 3-methyl-butan-1-ol) we’ll start by writing Butane. Butane is an alkane with four carbon atoms connected with single bonds. Next, we’ll number the Carbon atoms one through four.
Since we have 3-Methyl-1-butanol we’ll put an OH on Carbon atom number one. The OH replaces one of the H atoms on the first C atom in Butane. Since we also have 3-Methyl we'll put a methyl (-CH3) group on the third Carbon. This gives us the correct structure 3-Methyl-1-butanol.
We can also write the structure using straight lines without the element symbols, which is a sort of molecular structure shorthand This is the skeletal formula for 3-Methyl-1-butanol. Finally, we could represent the structure with molecular models to provide further information about the molecular geometry.
