To write the structure for the organic molecule Pentyne (also called Pent-1-yne or 1-Pentyne) we’ll start by writing Pentane. Pentane is an alkane with five carbon atoms connected with single bonds. Next, we’ll number the Carbon atoms one through five.
Since we have Pentyne we have and alkyne (ends in -yne). We'll put a triple bond between the first and second Carbon atoms. Because each Carbon atom can only have four bonds, we'll remove H atoms. This gives us the correct structure for Pentyne.
You will sometimes see it written as C5H8. It really doesn't matter if the triple bond on either side, the molecule is still the same.
We can also write the structure using straight lines without the element symbols, which is a sort of molecular structure shorthand This is the skeletal formula for Pentyne. Finally, we could represent the structure with molecular models to provide further information about the molecular geometry.
