Biochemistry and molecular biology techniques - an overview

Описание: There’s no typical day in a biochemistry lab! It’s one of the things that makes lab life so fab! Here I just want to let you know they exist and give you an idea of the types of experiments you can use to ask molecules various questions.

I introduce the fundamentals like gels (polyacrylamide & agarose), PCR, & molecular cloning, as well as various more obscure techniques like kinase assays and slot blot binding assays I just happen to have experience with.

Key takeaway - there are lots of experimental techniques and you probably won’t be doing them all, but it’s good to know how they work so you can turn to them if you need them, and so you can interpret results from them in papers. There are also usually multiple ways to get answers to different questions, although you might learn slightly different things depending on which approach you choose. But you need to know what approaches you can choose - hence this post.

Also note that there are a lot of other techniques I didn’t even get into but hope this can serve as a launch point for you to explore and discover more.
