anyway, time for the context!
Context:
After the whole turmoil of a vote, Etsuo, who had previously been hoping things would turn out in his favour, had his hopes ultimately crushed against the ground. He was quick to make his way from the Central Island, aware that Yuri was putting up the effort to catch up, although not taking the choice to wait for her nor look back. He was far too blinded by the fury that overgrew him, and the smallest interaction with anybody alone could get this volcano erupted tremendously.
He approached his cottage door, but heard Yuri, to his misfortune, finally make it to him before he could enter. She tugged at his sleeve to make herself present, but he pushed her hand away in frustration, to which she didn't react fondly, as her expression gave it away.
Etsuo: "...Yuri, I don't want to talk right now," he tried to drastically brush her off.
Yuri: "Etsuo, I need you to listen to me," she swiftly typed away with her fingers.
Etsuo: "I think I heard enough back there... do you have any clue what you just did, huh...?," his tone was unusually grim, for a reason.
Yuri: "I know you're angry with me but I need you to understand that I did this for you."
Etsuo: "HOW—," he seemed to start to shout, knocking Yuri out of her senses for a split second. He tried to calm himself down, but it didn't seem to cut it, "How the fuck do you think this helps me at all?!"
Yuri: "I needed to stand on the opposing side to keep your identity hidden, Etsuo. What if you became a target?"
As much as Yuri tried to prove her point, and as much as it was logical, Etsuo was beyond the ability to think rationally in order to consider his sister's reasoning. He was tired of everything. He wanted to finally shut the door and end things on a not-such-a-terrible note but then Yuri's tablet voiced out a message:
"I know how you feel, Etsuo."
...which caused his mind to absolutely spiral.
Without thinking, he approached Yuri and slapped the tablet out of her hands, continuing to yell.
"You don't know jack-SHIT, OKAY?! You don't know what I've been through to get this far, you don't know ANYTHING!—," and immediately slammed the door in her face.
Yuri was left standing alone outside, at least, she thought she was.
Tai had watched the whole thing unravel and was now watching Yuri break down in tears, but what was more suffocating is that she couldn't vocalize any of her pain, but simply let her eyes handle all of that alone. He watched her try to compose herself, to snap herself out of her trembly trance.
The poor girl barely managed to do so as she stumbled weakly to her own cottage.
Tai thought to himself if he should do something, and... as much as everyone hated him, he remembered that Yuri had tried to reach out to him that time, to try and understand the guy.
"It'd be better if she hated me too," he thought.
The pain of lying to someone about yourself is much more critical than when they know your true nature.
It's so much better to avoid playing pretend, but was it really pretending if Tai felt compassion and empathy towards Yuri?
She was just another girl trapped in this killing game, just like everybody else, although, while everyone had one or another way to cope through it, she was a struggling mess, at least in the current moment, so Tai could only...
Knock, knock, knock.
"Hey, Yuri, can we talk...?"
After a brief moment of bargaining and letting him explain himself, Yuri left the door ajar for Tai to come in.
