ASSOCIATED PRESS
Rome - 22 September 2025
1. Wide pan of people gathered outside Rome’s Termini train station, joining in general strike and demonstrations in solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza
2. Close of banner reading (Italian), “Make your stand... look how many of us are here”
3. Mid of Palestinian flags
4. Demonstrators shouting (English) “Free, free Palestine. Stop, stop genocide”
5. Mid of people applauding while shouting (Italian), “We are all Palestinians”
6. Maya Issa, president of the Palestinian student movement in Rome, leading the demonstration
7. Mid of banner showing Palestinian flag and a Palestinian woman with her fist raised
8. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Maya Issa, president of the Palestinian student movement in Rome:
“We expect to block everything, that's what we promised ourselves, because there are demonstrations in 60 Italian cities and nothing will leave from here, from the station, from the airports, from the ports. We don't want any more weapons. Our demands are clear. We want sanctions against Israel. A total embargo, not just on weapons. We want a break with Israel on an economic, academic, military, political, and sporting level. Israel must be isolated because it is not only a danger to the Palestinians, but a danger to the whole world.”
9. Wide of demonstrators
10. Close of banner reading (Italian), “Empathy? Hypocrisy. Shame of State. Free Palestine.”
11. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Saverio Schergna, employee of Atac, Rome's transport company, and trade unionist with the Unione Sindacale di Base (USB):
“We absolutely must stop this war. We must do it for the people who are losing their lives. They are innocent people. We must do it for the 15,000 children who have already died in this war. It is not a war because there is only one army. Our country has already spent 100 billion on weapons reinforcements, and here there are people working for less than 9 euros an hour. This is not possible, we must stop it (the war) together.”
12. Wide of demonstrators
13. Woman and banner reading (Italian), “Break trade and political ties with the terrorist state of Israel”
14. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Laura De Sanctis, 18-year-old student:
“I think that at this moment in history, especially for us young people, it is very important to have a well-defined, well-informed social and political conscience. It is an important battle. We have already experienced a similar situation in our history. To ignore it now would be to reject our history, and that is why I am participating.”
15. Wide of demonstrators holding flags of the union, Unione Sindacale di Base (USB)
16. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Paola Palmieri, national coordinator and trade unionist of the Unione Sindacale di Base:
“The government must recognize the state of Palestine. The government must take concrete action against the state, I must say, terrorist state of Israel, with what it is doing. And we can no longer play with statements. We have heard the statements that they will do something about the bad colonists, but here there is mass extermination.”
17. Wide of demonstration
18. Mid of a young man raising his arms with the words “Free Palestine”
19. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Francesco Morganti, teacher at a middle school in Rome:
“The students know we're out here, we told them, so they know we are here, and a lot of them are happy they didn't find us in class today. I think it's a really good start. It came late because the school probably moved very late, in line with society to some extent. We are all moving with a guilty delay, but better late than never.”
