During Ramadan, observant Muslims fast daily from dawn to sunset.

For Muslims, it’s a time for increased worship, religious reflection and charity.

Muslims typically stream into mosques for congregational prayers and dedicate more time to religious contemplation and the reading of the Quran, the Muslim holy book.

Ramadan is the holiest month of the Islamic year when Muslims are expected to abstain from eating, drinking, and smoking from dawn to dusk, a routine repeated every day of the fasting month.

Alongside the hardship of abstaining from food and drink, the month sweeps everyone up into a communal spirit.
