Today we're talking about the terrapin fork - the perfect utensil for when you're tired of having fast food.
The spork of its day, the terrapin fork was used to spear turtle meat and scoop up some of the gelatinous soup that was typically part of any turtle dish. Some terrapin forks were even crafted to simulate a turtle shell... which seems sort of mean, but OK. In the mid-1700s, British sailors returning from the West Indies began bringing sea turtles back home with them. Terrapin, being a freshwater turtle, was a bit easier to come by, but "mock turtle" soup - usually made using a calf's head - was the go-to choice for those who couldn't afford the real thing. So the next time you're enjoying your turtle soup with an ordinary spoon, imagine how much better it'd taste if you were using the proper turtle-serving utensil.
