Toby or not Toby... that is the question.
Starting in the 1760s, Toby jugs were made in the form of a large happy man with a tri-corn hat, a pipe, and a mug of ale. I mean, what else do you need? The origin of the term "toby" is a mystery, although it's possible these types of mugs were named for a notorious 18th-century drunk known as "Toby Fillpot." Toby jugs soon became commonplace at local pubs and taverns, where they were usually filled with a strong ale called stingo. Throughout the 19th century, many famous fictional and historical figures were depicted in Toby-jug form. Most Toby makers have stopped production these days, but the jugs are so collectible and fun that we feel a resurgence in popularity is meant to be.
