Adalimumab is a powerful prescription medication belonging to
a class of drugs known as biologics. Unlike chemically
synthesized drugs, biologics are large, complex molecules
manufactured using living cell cultures. Adalimumab is a
monoclonal antibody, meaning it is engineered to mimic the
antibodies naturally produced by our immune system, but it is
designed to target one very specific substance.
Its most famous brand name is Humira, but with the expiration
of its patent, several "biosimilar" versions are now available
(e.g., Amjevita, Hyrimoz, Cyltezo). These biosimilars are highly
similar to the original Humira in terms of structure, efficacy, and
safety.
