Clopidogrel is a critically important prescription medication belonging to
a class of drugs known as P2Y12 inhibitors or antiplatelet agents. In
simple terms, it is a "blood thinner," but more accurately, it is a drug that
prevents blood cells called platelets from clumping together to form
harmful blood clots.
It is most famously known by its original brand name, Plavix, though it is
now widely available as a generic medication. Its primary role is to reduce
the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and other serious cardiovascular events
in at-risk patients.
