What is the Presumption of Innocence?

One of the most beautiful, and misunderstood, parts of our legal system is the presumption of innocence. It’s not just a phrase. It’s a safeguard that separates freedom from tyranny.
When someone walks into court charged with a crime, they are presumed innocent. Not “probably guilty.” Not “they must’ve done something.” Innocent. Period. That’s the default. And it’s hard for people to accept—because our instincts say, “Why would they be here if they didn’t do it?”
But that’s exactly the thinking this principle exists to fight. The burden is on the government, not the accused. And not just to sort of prove guilt—they have to do it beyond a reasonable doubt.
That doesn’t mean a gut feeling or a vibe. It means a doubt rooted in reason, based on the actual evidence—or the absence of it. If you’re not morally certain, you must say not guilty. That’s the shield between you and unchecked power.
Because without that shield? Anyone could be accused of anything. And the government wouldn’t have to prove a thing. That’s not justice. That’s chaos.
