If you need to invoke the phrase "academic definition" then you've already lost the argument

Because even if you really are using an academic definition for whatever word or term we're arguing about outside of the context of it's specific academic field, "academic definition" is a synonym for "fake definition"

It's a classic Motte and Bailey, put forward what you want others to recognise as the definition for X, then when people call you out on it, fall back and say "oh but it's just the academic definition"

As if invoking academia in the modern day lends your argument any kind of legitimacy, rather than detracting from it

It's also a fake point because the next time this is brought up, you'll try this again

You'll posit your academic definition as THE definition, then once you get pushback, retreat to the Motte and say that it's just the "academic definition"

You do not get to substitute colloquial, everyday definitions with your niche, wannabe intellectual definitions, and then pretend that that always was the definition

In a fair, good faith, argument, the burden is on the speaker to be precise and transparent with their terminology, especially if their definitions deviate from common parlance

If you are interested in good faith discourse, you will not treat your niche definition as a universal one, you will not gaslight people into thinking that it is one and you will not invoke the "fluidity of language" to smuggle a definition that lets you atomatically win into the conversation

If you absolutely must use your niche definition outside of its intended niche then you will clarify your non-standard definition and its terms before you make your argument

Or at least during as an aside

Fail to achieve these actually very basic standards and you expose yourself as a snake and a bad actor

And of course, this applies to all other niche definitions, not just supposed academic ones
