Welcome back to Penzance, just days after Storm Goretti tore through Cornwall.
Eighty percent of the trees on St Michael’s Mount were reportedly lost. Roads were closed. Power was down. Winds reached hurricane force.
And yet today, Mount’s Bay is calm. Millpond calm.
In this video I explain why storms like this are so important to the geological cycle.
• Large waves stir up sediment that may not have moved for years — sometimes centuries.
• Coarse material like cobbles and boulders can be shifted and redistributed.
• Finer sediments are carried further offshore before settling out in calmer conditions.
• These storm deposits can even become preserved in the rock record.
What looks like destruction is also renewal. Beaches are replenished. Sediment is redistributed. The geological record is reset.
The sea may look peaceful now — but millions of tonnes of material were moved in a matter of hours.
