A cold one today, minus five when I got to the car, but we’re heading out anyway.
The sign says the trail has been damaged by storm flooding… so naturally we’re going to see how far we get.
Within minutes we’re into a spectacular limestone gorge at Dinas Rock. Vertical cliffs up to 40 metres high, calcite veins cutting through the rock, and clear evidence of solution features where water has exploited the limestone’s natural solubility.
You can see how the river has carved its way through the weakest zones, possibly even beginning as a solution tunnel before the roof collapsed to form this steep-sided canyon. Nature always finds the path of least resistance.
There’s fresh flood damage too, path material washed into the river, banks undercut, boulders freshly fallen from the cliff face. Erosion never stops.
And at the end of the trail… the waterfall. Still cutting down through the limestone today.
Absolutely stunning.
I’ve been the Down-to-Earth Geologist.
