Setup and execution of a surgical procedure to remove an anchor worm from my new pet goldfish.
Noticed this long, white, protrusion a few days after I brought him home from the big box pet store and set him up in his new home, a 10 gallon tank w/ aquaclear20 filtration bought used.
Not sure if from pet store or from the used tank equipment, but either way, no good. Some internet research led me to believe it might be an anchor worm, which is a rare parasitic crustacean that sometimes infects aquarium fish. It has an anchor-like mouth that it uses to grip into the body of the fish, and so it leaves a wound when removed. Treated the wound from this one with a swab of hydrogen peroxide and a subsequent swab of H2Ocean, which is a human saline product to treat new piercings. That second part was an improvisation! But I figured it couldn't hurt.
