Sharpening Buzz Saw Blade for Kubota B7100

Описание: The cooler weather is making us a bit anxious because if you can read the body language of our wood pile, it looks like it is assuring us of a mild winter because it isn't anywhere near full. Now that is a trifle misleading as we really only burn about one of the three sections per season and there is clearly one full section and two partially full ones. So we are not hurting for wood, but we try to have all three full by this time in the fall to ensure three full years under roof for air drying. We like also to maintain a mixture of split wood and limb wood throughout the wood stacked in the shed because it minimizes the possibility of getting a months worth of nothing but pole wood in line for transport to the houses. As stated in the video, the more dense heart wood contains the greatest content of btu's/pound of wood and the pole wood having been cut and stacked for at least one year has 20 to 30% of its physical size and weight in the form of 'sap' wood. (Not a scientific fact...just a rough estimation.) Sap wood loses its moisture content rather quickly and begins the process of deteriorating much more rapidly than does the heart wood. BUT.... what the super dry sap wood DOES do for you is it allows a much more robust flame in a shorter period of time that does pure heart wood. Simply, it allows you to build a good fire much more easily when fueled by properly prepared kindling. So that's the good part. The bad part is it seems as though you've created a wood eating monster if you are trying to heat your home or shop to a comfortable level (72-74 degrees) when it is 0* F outside (-18*C). The beast is seemingly insatiable !! Soooo ....a good mix is our answer to the dilemma.
Ok on to the topic of today's video.... preparing the 32" diameter blade on the Kubota powered buzz saw for its fall debut in the new sitcom: "Dancing in the Woodpile with Tractorman44 or Preparing Pole Wood for the Furnace". Being the star of the show, it was suggested that the bearings be greased on the old Buzz Saw and the blade be 'touched up' with the file. There is a lot of tediousness in the video and it may be only those discerning viewers that have the specific interest in the process of maintaining these blades that have the will power to maintain interest throughout. All others, I understand if you are not interested in a guy preparing what appears to some as a Medieval Torture Machine on which the dance troupe will perform their dangerous performances. The neat thing on boring videos is the FF button. LOL...but I'm sure NONE of my awesome viewership engages in that behavior.
On a serious note, please also be advised that I am not a professional saw sharpener by any means and neither do I want you to think this is the absolute only or correct way to accomplish the task at hand. There are plenty of ways to do this, I am just enjoying giving you the opportunity to observe the way I was brought up to sharpen and service these blades by my Dad who went to the big wood pile in the sky (or down below stoking the furnace) back in 2001. What he may have lacked in ability to actually verbalize in words he more than made up for it in practical application. The old codger could sharpen anything from scissors to ice skates to sickle bar mowers and from screwdrivers to chainsaws to sawmill blades. And I tell you one skill he honed to perfection and that was swatting me right in the tail end when my performance was sub par. Butt...that is a non-tangible ability so we can all forget that one.......
If you've seen the video I certainly hope you enjoyed it and if you are going to go watch it now know that by reading all this text you FF button on the keyboard is now disabled. LOL
The little Kubota has been living with us since new in '82 and has been an unbelievable little workhorse. The Missus said I could either buy this or a motorcycle of equal value. I think I make the right choice because this little guy is still going strong with nothing but oil, filters and a couple front tires. Everything else is original.
I should do a video on the real dangers of using these saw rigs as to a newbie they can literally be a death machine. They can take a finger, hand or arm off in the blink of a eye so constant attention MUST be maintained at all times. I raised all three of my kids offbearing on these machines and they all are well versed in the do's and don'ts of operation. But just one little nubbin of a knot or anything under your feet can toss you so quickly at the blade that you cannot believe it !! We constantly kick sawdust and debris away from our work area during operation.
With all the kidding set aside, please also be advised that no one should be around these with a beer in their hand or cursed with the deficit of inattention. That person will be an accident waiting to happen. Dang I almost hate to be serious, but on this I am totally serious.
Enjoy.
