Day 4 of this 5 day sketchbook challenge, requires you subtract highlights, which allows you to think about your subject matter in a different 4 of the challenge teaches you how to look for the highlights and produce a subtractive drawing.
Use charcoal to texture the page, then use a rubber to pull out the highlights. A charcoal pencil or compressed charcoal can be used to add the darkest shadows.
Techniques-
Use charcoal to create a medium tone on the page, then spend your time to pull out the highlights.
Use a fine rubber for details.
Use compressed charcoal for the darker tones.
To create a fluid line quality you should work as quickly as possible.
Try to study the source more than you look at the paper.
Try to study your subject from different viewpoints so you are continuing to get to know its form.
