USA streetcars are making a comeback. Here’s why
How many miles of streetcar lines in the US were in the past that you knew before it was replaced by other transportation? Now, streetcars are making a big comeback. In many American cities, they’re being reintroduced as a way to help people get around and breathe new life into struggling neighborhoods. Several cities already have projects underway to get these streetcar systems back on track and rolling again.
So, what makes streetcars so important today? And what exactly are these US cities doing to make sure these projects succeed?
A Look Back at the History of Streetcars in the USA
Back in the day—around the early 1900s—streetcars were everywhere. They started out being pulled by horses, and by the time they took off, there were about 17,000 miles of streetcar lines across the U.S. You could find them in pretty much every big city, even in places like Atlanta, Raleigh, and Los Angeles—cities you wouldn’t exactly call transit-heavy today.

As time went on, streetcars got an upgrade. Electric versions became super popular, and for a while, they were the go-to way to get around town. But things started to change when cities began building more roads and highways for buses and, especially, cars. Cars were getting cheaper, more people could afford them, and before long, driving became the default option for a lot of folks.
The real problem? Cars and streetcars had to share the same streets. And when traffic piled up, it slowed the streetcars down. They couldn’t stick to their schedules, and that made them way less convenient. So little by little, streetcars started disappearing.

In L.A., things were already getting out of hand by the 1920s. Around 160,000 cars were blocking the streets, and people riding the streetcars were stuck in the mess. Traffic was so bad that some rides took over an hour—no one was happy.
On top of that, streetcar companies had to pay to keep the roads around their tracks in good condition. That was part of the deal in a lot of cities. So even though cars were basically taking over, the streetcar companies were stuck covering road maintenance, helping out the very traffic that was slowing them down.
