STORYLINE:

A funeral was held on Tuesday for an Israeli soldier who was killed in a ramming incident last month in the occupied West Bank.

Troops carried the body of Sergeant Maxim Molchanov into Kiryat Shaul cemetery in Tel Aviv, as his grieving family and hundreds of mourners followed.

Local media reported that Molchanov had immigrated to Israel from Ukraine in 2017 and enlisted in the Israeli army in 2022.

Israeli authorities said a Palestinian driver slammed his truck into soldiers at a busy checkpoint in the West Bank on August 31, killing Molchanov before being shot dead.

The violence came a day after Israeli police shot and killed a 14-year-old Palestinian boy who stabbed a man in a Jerusalem light-rail station and after Palestinian militants detonated a bomb near a convoy of Israeli troops escorting Jewish worshippers to a holy site in the West Bank, wounding four Israeli troops.

The unrest is part of more than a yearlong wave of violence that has surged to levels unseen in the West Bank in two decades.
