Welcome to the Garden City. Tours is the largest settlement in the central region of France within the Loire Valley. Founded by the romans as Caesarodunum, the city began to grow throughout the Middle Ages before being renamed after the local Turones tribe
The city also became a major Christian center thanks to Saint Martin of Tours, whose shrine attracted pilgrims from across Europe. In the later Middle Ages, Tours prospered as a hub of silk production, royal administration, and Renaissance culture, especially under the French kings who favored the Loire Valley. Despite later decline during political turmoil, it revived in the 19th century with the railway and remains today the historic capital of Touraine, known for its gardens, châteaux, and role as a gateway to the Loire Valley.
