Anchor tasks found in every lesson provide opportunities for students to develop these competencies and teachers are encouraged to begin every lesson with the anchor task.

Collaboration is an important 21st century competency and Anchor Tasks allow students to work collaboratively to explore ideas.

There are many different types of anchor tasks. Some require students to employ creative thinking by coming up with different ways to solve the problem. Some require students to engage in critical thinking to identify common errors presented in the anchor task and correct them. Others may involve complex, multi-step problems where students need to exercise their ability in metacognition.

Students are often encouraged to talk and discuss to hone their oral communication skills as well as use journal writing to develop their written communication skills.
