Anchor Tasks in think! Mathematics are designed to engage students in collaborative learning and stimulate critical and creative thinking. Both struggling learners and advanced learners can be supported and challenged using Anchor Tasks.
How can we support struggling learners?
• Provide students with more opportunities to explore the idea that they’re supposed to be learning. Avoid technical jargon and use everyday language.
• Give students ample time for them to spend on the Anchor Task so that they can internalise the ideas and build the necessary schema.
• Encourage students to interact and communicate with others about their ideas. (Vygoysky’s theory)
• Make sure that students can make meaning of the concept that they learn. (Skemp’s idea)
• Let students learn abstraction through the use of visuals such as concrete experiences and pictorial representations. (Bruner’s CPA approach)
How can we challenge advanced learners?
• Give students alternative answers and have them explain the methods.
• Modify the problem by giving them alternative scenarios and getting them to solve the problem.
• Develop their communication by having them explain how they solve a problem.
• Develop their creativity by getting students to invent a method.
• Get them to pose a problem.
It is important to assess students’ learning during various activities in the classroom. Students can be assessed as a class or as an individual.
