Carlisle was deathly quiet today - despite a visit from a charter whose steam traction had been replaced by diesel. It had only been drawn to my notice the previous day that this was the weekend of the annual Vintage Vehicles Rally at Kirkby Stephen so, despite transport difficulties caused by the closure of my local line, I made a last-minute decision to go for it.
The day was riddled with problems - I mislaid my Senior Railcard (expensive!), lost my waterproof coat, made a major error with the drone (old age!), had to take a long slow service bus to get back from Carlisle to Dumfries and ended up with a late-night two-mile hike over the hill, carrying all my equipment, to get home.
As one of my regular friends said to me at Carlisle - "Tim, you're - -"
I hope you'll think it was worth it.
