Photographing the only regular rail freight to cross the Pennines by the Copy Pit railway line.
My alarm was set early to get to Portsmouth on the Copy Pit railway line to photograph the Lindsey Oil Refinery to Preston Docks Bitumen the only regular freight train to cross the Pennines by the Copy Pit Railway line. This morning hauled by Colas Rail Class 70 70810.
The line sees the early morning 6M32 loaded bitumen train from Total’s Lindsey Oil Refinery in North Lincolnshire join the Copy pit Line at Hall Royd Junction at 6:30 in the morning, so you need to be up early to see this freight train, this works to the Preston Docks line to Total Preston’s facility for tar production, returning empty as 6E32 at just after 11am.
My railway photography morning was spent at Portsmouth just outside Cornholme photographing the early morning freight train and a couple of local trains, then upon the Hills around Cornholme photographing local trains, before moving to Lydgate for more railway photography and photography the returning empty Colas Rail Class 70 from Preston to Lindsey Oil Refinery.

I am proud to be a member of the Phoenix Railway Photographic Circle and equally honoured to have won the Railway Photographer of the Year 2021.
2021 represents a significant milestone in the history of the Phoenix Railway-Photographic Circle with the celebration of our 50th anniversary by publishing a book to showcase some of the members work, past and present, from 1971 to the present day.
The book contains 14 chapters and 144 pages of photographs depicting the work of over 50 accomplished railway photographers with many differing styles and approaches. It takes an alternative view on photographing the railway scene over the past 50 years.
