This was probably the craziest day yet. From the Ninth Fort’s silence to a haunted manor to a plot twist Airbnb at 4 a.m. — the road keeps writing its own script.

A grey, rain-soaked morning sets the tone as we pack up and push deeper into the Gumbalkan 2025 Summer Edition.

Breakfast is chaos, the 1000 € Volvo V70 still limps along, and the day turns from lighthearted to heavy at Kaunas’ Ninth Fort — a WWI fortress turned WWII prison and execution site. Concrete corridors, punishment cells, and escape stories etched into the walls: a stark reminder of why we travel with respect.

We chase the mood back up with road snacks, strange ruins in the countryside, and a pair of abandoned manors that feel straight out of a horror game — creaking floors, scattered relics, and that uneasy quiet. Then it’s onward to the Hill of Crosses near Šiauliai, where tens of thousands of crosses reach toward the Baltic sky and the road feels spiritual again.

By nightfall we cross into Latvia and roll into Riga for an Airbnb… with a surprise twist. It’s frustrating, weirdly warm, and somehow very Gumbalkan: history, mishaps, and the strangers who keep you going.
