Goodbye. San Francisco Centre Mall - The Final Walkthrough

Описание: In this video, I do a final walkthrough on every floor of the mall during its last Holidays. I also included some old clips, which were taken either with my old iPhone 12 or Moto G5 Plus. This will be my last video, ever, from this mall.

In 1988, this mall had its grand opening as Westfield San Francisco Centre. The Nordstrom flagship store opened on the top half of the 1988 portion of the mall, essentially being integrated with everything else. This also featured North America's very spiral escalators that were installed by Mitsubishi. This was one the 10 (or less) places where you can see and ride them. When the Emporium flagship department store closed in 1996, the whole site was gutted out, with The Dome being preserved, and redeveloped to become part of the mall. The new portion of the mall was completed and opened around 2006. This included a new anchor store, Bloomingdales, and a new Century Theaters. The mall was absolutely thriving. I remember my parents (my mom mainly) took me here a few times many years back and I just wanted to wander around the whole day. I also remember going with my cousin and my mom during the Holidays, and I very immersed into the joyful holiday spirit having fun during winter break. When I was there during those times, the mall was packed, especially the food court when there was so much variety there.

The mall was performing really well in the entire Bay Area until the biggest event hit, the C19 pandemic. This event not only restricted people from going to the mall, but it had also completely reshaped the dynamics of the city. Online shopping become very popular and most people would work from home even after the pandemic subsided, eliminating the need to go to the mall. Crime became a huge issue, through thefts and looting going uncontrolled, exacerbating this shift in dynamics. Dr*gs and homelessness also caused safety and security of the employees and deterred customers. The foot traffic and sales kept plummeting until the biggest blow in 2023, amplifying it, hit. Nordstrom announced their closure on August of that year, and this was when the biggest downfall of the mall began. Westfield stopped owning the mall as a result. Going back to the mall after Nordstrom closed, it just felt quite depressing to see the upper half all darkened and boarded off. Throughout the next year, smaller stores and shops from the food court continued to flee the mall, until the final blow. Bloomingdales announced they would shutter their doors in Spring 2025 being the last anchor store to leave the mall. At this point, I was pessimistic about the future of the mall as operating a mall without any anchor store under rising rents isn't sustainable. 2025 became the very last year of the mall to operate and last year for the mall to ever celebrate the Holidays. That year was when nearly all remaining stores have left the mall for good. While there were a few remaining, the property owners forced them through lawsuits and evictions. In January 2026, the mall had announced their official closure, ending the 37 years of this place welcoming customers since the grand opening. San Francisco will never be the same without this mall has it has gained so much sentimental value over the years.

My thoughts on the closure:
Early after the pandemic subsided, my friends and I would hang out and chill in this place frequently. There just a lot to walk around. I remember one of my friends and I playing guess the price at Bloomingdales. Eventually after Nordstrom closed, this place never felt the same to me ever again. Once a place of fun was turned of dread. I couldn't pick up that holiday spirit stepping into this mall anymore. I'm quite saddened to see a piece of my childhood and once a great hub for many of my hangouts go away for good. I'll never forget the moments going here as a child and, when I grew older, with friends. I'll also miss the awesome moments of riding the spiral escalators that gave view different breathtaking view of the atrium.

Farewell, San Francisco Centre mall. Thank you for serving all of us for the past 37 years.
