Broad gauge Pacific National grain service 9146 had been loaded in the Murray Basin but experienced problems near Ballarat while on its journey to Geelong. A pair of locomotives went to assist the train and returned as the rare sight of quad XR class diesels. To add to the excitement a standard gauge grain train had been doing locomotive swaps at Gheringhap, with those locomotives heading towards Melbourne just as the last grain hopper cleared the view.
