We collect techniques like they’re trading cards, convinced that the next slick sweep or that complex submission from YouTube holds the key. We fill notebooks, binge instructionals, and jump from one "move of the week" to the next.

According to legendary coach John Frankl, a 5th-degree black belt under Roberto Maia and the man who pioneered Jiu-Jitsu in Korea, the secret to mastery isn't about what you add, but what you focus on. He argues that in all of Jiu-Jitsu, focusing on fundamentals over a longer period of time whilst remaining injury free and in good health is the answer to enjoying jiu jitsu over the course of your life.

In this video, I ask John his opinion on how best to start jiu jitsu and his advice on how to progress.
