Each year 100’s of people across the United Kingdom are injured when someone opens a car door into their path. Coming from the Netherlands, this tactic is an easy way to prevent injury and accidents both to yourself and other road users.

The Dutch Reach teaches us to open a car door safely, by not using the hand closest to the door but reaching across with the hand furthest from the door your left hand if you’re the driver. When using the Dutch Reach, you will naturally turn your head and shoulders towards the door mirror and blind spot, helping you see approaching cyclists, motor cyclists and other traffic.

The safest way to open a car door is called a “Dutch Reach” this is a system which forces you to look into your blind spot before opening your driver’s door and/or any other car door.
In this video, we focus on the Dutch Reach! It is a method for opening your car doors; it will ensure that you will never open your door on a cyclist or anything else which is in your blind spot.
How the Dutch reach works is very simple. Drivers and passengers reach across their bodies to open the car door with their left hand. This simple movement forces the driver to turn to the right, casting an eye into the door mirror and looking into the blind spot of the vehicle before opening the door.

This method improves safety for drivers, passengers, cyclist, motor cyclists, pedestrians and any vehicle that happens to be over taking you at the time.

This video is not an official DVSA video but it’s my interpretation of the DVSA documents DT1 (guidance to driving examiners) and DL25 (driving test marking sheet) given my 27+ years in the industry.
