It might sound like it’s NSFW, but trust us – the Dutch Reach is not only safe, it’s encouraged. Get into the habit of opening your car door with your right hand before stepping out: this way, you’re forced to turn your head and body to check whether an oncoming cyclist (or even another car) might be passing by. Do this both by looking in your rearview mirror and over your shoulder behind you. Hailing from the bike-laden streets of the Netherlands, this tactic is an easy way to prevent injury and accidents both to yourself and others sharing the road.
