A probationary period is typically in the unemployment laws when there's a period of time of 90 days for the employer to examine the employee and determine if they want to continue employing that person. Sometimes there are contracts between the employer and employee, where there's a probationary period, where the employee will not be given any certain benefits or certain financial interests beyond the 90 day period or 60 day period. Examples would be stock options or 401K participation or other employee benefits.
