Tyneham is one of England's most poignant ghost villages, tucked into a valley in the Purbeck Hills of Dorset, within the Isle of Purbeck.

The Wartime Evacuation
In November 1943, the 225 residents of Tyneham received an order from the War Office to vacate their homes within 28 days. The land was needed by the Army for D-Day training exercises. As villagers left, someone pinned a note to the church door that read something to the effect of: "Please treat the church and houses with care; we have given up our homes where many of us lived for generations to help win the war to keep men free. We shall return one day and thank you for treating the village kindly."
They never returned.

What's There Today
The village sits within the Lulworth Ranges, a large Ministry of Defence firing range. It is open to the public on most weekends and during school holidays. What remains includes:

St Mary's Church (12th century), which has been partially restored and contains a small museum about the village's history
The old schoolhouse, also preserved as a museum
Roofless, overgrown stone cottages reclaimed by nature
Surrounding farmland and dramatic countryside leading toward Worbarrow Bay, a beautiful and largely unspoilt cove a short walk away

The Landscape
Because the area has been off-limits to development for over 80 years, the surrounding countryside and coastline are in remarkably pristine condition. The valley is rich in wildlife, and Worbarrow Bay — accessible from the village — is one of the most secluded spots on the Jurassic Coast.

The Broken Promise
After the war ended, residents and their descendants campaigned for decades to return. The government repeatedly broke its promise to hand the land back, and the Army retained permanent control. It became something of a cause célèbre in post-war Britain, symbolising the way ordinary people were treated by the state. The village was never resettled.

Visiting
Access is via a single road through the ranges from Wool or East Lulworth. On open days, you can walk freely around the ruins and down to Worbarrow Bay. The atmosphere is genuinely haunting — a complete English village frozen in 1943, slowly being absorbed back into the hillside.
