Abbey Gardens on Tresco is a truly remarkable subtropical garden located on the island of Tresco in the Isles of Scilly, just 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall. It's often described as "a perennial Kew without the glass" and was established in the 19th century by Augustus Smith around the ruins of a Benedictine Abbey.
The garden spans 17 acres and is home to an extraordinary collection of over 20,000 plants from more than 80 countries, with about 2,000 exotic species from Mediterranean climate zones around the world, including plants from Brazil, New Zealand, South Africa, Burma, and Australia. Thanks to the mild climate created by the Gulf Stream, these plants flourish outdoors year-round - something that would be impossible anywhere else in the UK.
The gardens were created on terraced levels, with each area showcasing plants from different regions. The Top Terrace features plants from South Africa and Australia, including Protea and Aloe, while the Middle Terrace is the heart of the garden with fishponds and a summerhouse Enchanted Gardens. The famous Long Walk is lined with tree ferns and palms.
Some unique features include:
The Valhalla Museum - A collection of about 30 figureheads and ship carvings from vessels wrecked on the Isles of Scilly, started by Augustus Smith himself
Red squirrels - Reintroduced to the island in 2012-2013, they now roam freely through the gardens
Year-round blooms - Even in midwinter, around 300 species remain in flower
The garden is designated Grade I in the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens and has remained in the same family for five generations. Today it's managed by Robert and Lucy Dorrien-Smith as part of the Tresco Estate.
