LYRICS:
[Verse 1]
From all over Ulster, we did come
Answered the beat of the Lambeg drum
Cities, towns, just local lads
V-Villages, farms, us the best of pals
[Verse 2]
At the town hall, I joined the queue
A 17 year-old lad, me not a clue
Watched as others were turned away
Them not of age, needed more birthdays
[Verse 3]
As I approached the front of the row
I thought of lying, sure they wouldn’t know
But saw my pals leaving on the train
So hopped on in like a young John Wayne
[Chorus]
Off to war, we did go
Full of courage and bravo
[Verse 4]
Off to France, went the loyal crew
For the red, white and blue
With bibles, guns, we’d fight the Huns
No surrender, from the Ulster sons
[Chorus]
For King and country we would fight
For God and Ulster was our plight
[Verse 5]
The 1st of July, the Battle of the Somme
Butchered, maimed, many pals gone
The greatest death toll ever inflicted
In a single day on a British contingent
[Chorus]
For our land we went to fight
For our pals we gave our life
[Verse 6]
Paraded in our ranks, the morning after
Could hear a pin drop, there was no laughter
A name was called, him dead the answer
Again the question, again the same answer
[Chorus]
So many wounded, so many died
Young men like me, and Willie McBride
[Verse 7]
Neighbourhoods and villages left in shock
Hearts stopped beating, when doors knocked
Deaths of husbands, fathers and sons
Boyfriends, brothers and grandsons
[Pre-Chorus]
In communal tragedy, streets bound together
In grief and pride, forever remember
[Chorus]
Off to war we did go
Full of courage and bravo
For King and country we would fight
For God and Ulster was our plight
For our land we went to fight
For our pals we gave our life
So many wounded so many died
Young men like me and Willie McBride
In communal tragedy streets bound together
In grief and pride, forever remember
