TWO BATTALIONS WENT
Dedicated to the soldiers of the Royal Ulster Rifles who had the unique distinction of being the only British regiment to land in Normandy on the 6th June 1944 by both air (1st bn) and sea (2nd bn).
[Chorus]
To defend the free world many armies were sent
From the Royal Ulster Rifles, 2 battalions went
In horsa gliders by air and landing craft by sea
They landed in Normandy, in the fight to be free
[Verse 1]
The first of them to land, did so by sea
Their first obstacle water, it way above the knee
To take a little village, many Ulster sons lost
Many had no children, their bloodline the cost
[Chorus]
To defend the free world many armies were sent
From the Royal Ulster Rifles, 2 Battalions went
In horsa gliders by air and landing craft by sea
They landed in Normandy, in the fight to be free
[Verse 2]
In their wooden air chariots, they avoided flak burst
Came down at Ranville, in mortar fire were immersed
Not a triumphal procession from the landings in France
As war graves through Europe still mark their advance
[Chorus]
To defend the free world many armies were sent
From the Royal Ulster Rifles, 2 Battalions went
In horsa gliders by air and landing craft by sea
They landed in Normandy, in the fight to be free
[Chorus]
To defend the free world many armies were sent
From the Royal Ulster Rifles, 2 Battalions went
In horsa gliders by air and landing craft by sea
They landed in Normandy, in the fight to be free
