Las Vegas Municipal Court: What You Need to Know

If you are arrested or cited for a misdemeanor offense within the official city limits of Las Vegas, your case will be handled at the Las Vegas Municipal Court. This court has a very specific jurisdiction and is a critical part of the local justice system, but it's important to understand what types of cases it hears and, just as importantly, what cases it does not.

The Las Vegas Municipal Court's authority is limited exclusively to misdemeanor offenses. These are crimes that carry a maximum penalty of up to six months in jail and/or a fine of up to one thousand dollars. Common cases that are resolved in this court include first or second-offense DUIs, traffic tickets like speeding, petit larceny (shoplifting), simple battery, and disturbing the peace. The court's jurisdiction includes areas like Downtown Las Vegas and parts of Summerlin that are within the incorporated city boundaries.

It is crucial not to confuse this court with the Las Vegas Justice Court, which is located in the same building, the Regional Justice Center. The Justice Court handles all preliminary hearings for felony and gross misdemeanor cases for the entire Las Vegas valley, as well as misdemeanor cases that occur in unincorporated Clark County. Knowing which court has jurisdiction over your case is a vital first step in building an effective legal defense.
