The serve and volley is one of the most traditional strategies in the game of tennis.

Pete Sampras was one of the greatest serve and volley players ever.

The footwork getting to the net has been hotly debated for years.

Should you take lots of little steps?

Should you sprint up to the net as fast as you can?

I am here to tell you that both of those things are wrong.

If you watch Pete Sampras he actually took one step after the serve and then split stepped on the serve and volley.

This is not a joke!

He would split step far behind the service line on the serve and volley.

I started learning this later in my career on the tour, and it really helped me with my serve and volley game.

If you can realize that the split step is not a motion that makes you stop but a transition into the volley, your serve and volley game will go to new heights.

Try split stepping earlier and transition into the volley after the serve with bigger steps.
