Hi guys,
Thank you for the recent support on the channel! I'm really enjoying making videos more consistently this year and really appreciate every time I hear from you.
This week's video is for anyone who wants to go deep into the philosophy of Monk Mode.
I started thinking about it after spending a week sleeping at my office while preparing for a recording session.
Afterwards, I realised I'd learnt a lot in the process, so I reflected on and researched the Philosophy of Monk Mode.
I recorded the video in my studio in the Mahalla Arts Community here in Berlin, and it was edited by my dear friend Tiago Pöx - who made the beautiful text.
Enjoy! Jim

All humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone," Blaise Pascal once remarked. This thought resonates deeply with my recent journey into "Monk Mode."
This period of purposeful solitude, inspired by the minimalist and disciplined lifestyle of monks, has been a transformative phase for me, one I'm eager to share, especially through my recent experiences and upcoming projects on YouTube.
Early this year, I found myself in Monk Mode, sleeping in my office. This isolation was not for nought; it was a preparatory silence before diving back into the recording studio.
One morning, the realisation hit me hard: time was slipping, and the only way to stretch it was to immerse myself fully in the present, in the process of creation itself.
During these days of intense focus, I documented my journey, preparing to share this on YouTube, linking it closely to the development of my new album.
I will share that video another time, but this video is a deep dive into what I learnt about Monk Mode during and after it.
This mode of living isn't just about personal growth; it's a deep dive into the very fabric of creativity, leveraging solitude to enhance productivity and self-discovery.
Monk Mode is about eliminating distractions to focus on one's core pursuits. Yet, as I explored this concept, drawing from the lives of monks, Viktor Frankl, and even Elon Musk, I aimed to reconnect it with its origins—far removed from the "grind culture" it's often associated with today.
The Desert Fathers, early Christian hermits, were pioneers of solitude, finding divine revelation in silence. Their wisdom, like Abba Moses’s advice to "Go, sit in your cell, and your cell will teach you everything," has been a guiding light. It's a stark reminder of the modern paradox: we crave time alone yet flounder when we get it, ensnared by distractions.
My interpretation of Monk Mode challenges popular productivity hacks, like elaborate morning routines. It's not about how many tasks you can tick off before dawn but about swiftly entering your deepest creative space to make the most of your energy. This approach has not only clarified my creative process but also profoundly enriched my life, offering a clearer path to achieving meaningful goals.
Drawing lessons from the monks, Thomas Merton, and Brother Lawrence, I've learned that Monk Mode isn't merely about retreating from the world but deepening our presence within it. It's a philosophy of work done with love and purpose, not for the sake of achievement but for the act itself. This mindset transforms sacrifice into a deeply rewarding practice, one that enriches both work and personal life.
In applying Monk Mode to my life, I've made conscious sacrifices—like abstaining from alcohol and limiting digital consumption—to deepen my work experience. Surprisingly, this hasn't led to isolation but to a more profound connection with those around me, proving that true presence is not about physical proximity but about the depth of the connection.
As I venture further into this journey, sharing my experiences through music and stories, I find the principles of Monk Mode more relevant than ever. They serve not just as a method for enhanced productivity but as a foundation for a fulfilled purpose-driven life. This mode of living is not an escape but an embrace of what truly matters: creating with purpose, loving the process, and finding meaning in the stillness of being truly present.
Thank you for joining me in this exploration. If you're intrigued by the notion of Monk Mode and how it intertwines with creativity and personal growth, I invite you to follow along on my YouTube channel, where I'll be diving deeper into these themes. Together, let's discover the power of purposeful solitude in transforming not just our work, but our lives.
