Hi guys,
I was beavering away at the piano tonight and a few things came up — sharing here in this quick video on my iphone. I want to dare to show more of my process from now on — rather than when there’s a finished “product”. As I get older, art becomes more about what I learn about life through it — and the gift of sharing that with others. I never knew it, but that was the reward I was seeking all along, i just didn’t know it yet.
3 Takeaways
1. Humble yourself before the instrument. Progress comes from going slower, not faster — tenacity without ego.
2. Take the ifs out. Make showing up non-negotiable, and bring your prime energy to it, not your leftovers.
3. Be kind to yourself. Learning is a joyous adventure through failure. The aspiring version of you, right now, is enough — BUT — keep aspiring upwards too!
The Little Lesson
Learning something new — at any age — demands a paradox: whole-hearted commitment paired with radical patience. We all want to be in rush with what we want to learn. But to learn it, you have to do what it requires. And usually, that means slowing down, not speeding up. Presence, I think, is a form of spiritual courage.
If you’re trying to learn something new, try to resist the trap of measuring yourself against a future version you haven’t become yet. The joy is always in the attempt itself — to meet yourself as you are, right in the moment you are aspiring to be something else.
In the comments lease let me know if you’re learning something new! Any questions?
Love Jim
