The Little Rann of Kutch is one of India’s most unique and dramatic landscapes — a vast seasonal salt desert that transforms with the rhythm of monsoon and summer. Located in Gujarat, this extraordinary region remains flooded during the rains and turns into a shimmering white salt plain as the water evaporates.

This harsh yet beautiful terrain is world-famous for being home to the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary, the last natural refuge of the endangered Indian Wild Ass (Khur). Despite extreme temperatures and salinity, the Little Rann supports remarkable biodiversity, including desert foxes, wolves, jackals, and migratory birds such as flamingos, pelicans, and cranes.

The area is also deeply connected to human history and livelihoods. For centuries, traditional salt workers—Agariyas—have harvested salt here using age-old methods, making the Little Rann an important center of salt production in India. Geologically, it represents an ancient seabed, shaped by tectonic movements, river sediments, and evaporation over thousands of years.
