In the Autumn of 1850 when New College was first opened each of the Professors was invited to give a public lecture to introduce their discipline to a general audience and to explore some of the big ideas that were being discussed.
This tradition is carried on to this day at New College and at the start of each academic year colleagues at New College are invited to give a public lecture.
