Fansipan (Vietnamese: Phan Xi Păng) is a mountain in Vietnam. Its height was originally measured at 3,143 meters (10,312 ft) in 1909, but this value was later adjusted to 3,147.3 meters (10,326 ft). It is the highest mountain on the Indochinese peninsula (comprising Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia), hence its nickname, "the Roof of Indochina". It is located in the Lào Cai province of the Northwest region of Vietnam, nine kilometers (5+1⁄2 miles) southwest of Sa Pa, in the Hoang Lien Son mountain range. Administratively, it is shared between Tam Đường District, Lai Châu, and Sa Pa town.
We planned to hike Fansipan Mountain during our trip to Sapa, and we are wondering if we could do a DIY, just use Google map to help us track our path. We have read blogs about some people who hiked to Fansipan Peak without a guide and thought we can also do it by ourselves. To make it sure, we went to Sapa Tourist Information Center to inquire and they told us DIY is prohibited. Everyone who wish to do trekking to Fansipan must have a local guide. So, we booked our hike for the next day, better to be safe than sorry.
We booked at the Tourist Information Center, they gave us discount. A bit less from the price of travel and tour agencies outside. Even your hotel or own accommodation offers a tour like this and more activities.
