Being able to keep up with technology in schools can be tough at times, but not for the University of Iowa. Having the correct technology for mechanical engineering programs gives students the opportunity to keep up with the real world. The University of Iowa is doing just that by teaching their students with the enhanced capabilities of CNC machinery. This teaches students not only how to design the products, but also how to make that design come to life.

Students in the mechanical engineering program speak about how having this type of knowledge is a lot more valuable than just being able to design the part. Understanding how products are created all the way through the design process plays a huge part in helping students in the field. The University of Iowa has a PCNC 440 in their shop of which can cut all types of materials from plastics to titanium.

The technology offers a unique offering to students with little to no experience. If the students are to slip up and make a mistake, the fixes aren’t typically damaging to the machine. If they are, it is a cheap fix comparatively to larger machines. The machine has a compact footprint and can easily be moved around with a pallet jack by the mechanical engineering students.
