(4 Jun 2014) The Archbishop of Canterbury made an unexpected visit to Nigeria on Wednesday to pray with the president and offer condolences for the "struggles and suffering" of recent days.
Archbishop Justin Welby has worked on conflict resolution and in the past negotiated with violent groups in the African country.
He said he was "personally deeply saddened" by recent bombings in Jos because he knows the place so well.
Meanwhile, Boko Haram militants are taking over villages in northeastern Nigeria, killing and terrorising civilians and political leaders, witnesses say, as the Islamic fighters make a comeback from a year-long military offensive aimed at crushing them.
The Archbishop says the country has so much going for it, but it needs to get through the current wave of violence.
He said that during their open meeting, President Jonathan spoke of the need to reach out to everyone in Nigeria on many levels, "not just security but economy and spiritual and every part of the human being."
