STORYLINE:
Palestinians have been rushing for the second day in a row to local markets in southern Gaza to buy and store whatever food they can, haunted by the painful memory of devastating periods of food scarcity and famine last year.

Regional tension sent people into a panic as Israel announced it was closing all crossings into Gaza.

“People are scared of the famine that they endured in (July, August, and September), and it was a difficult time for people,” said Osama Hanoda, from Khan Younis. “When the crossings shut down, everything was suspended from the market. The prices go up and people live in misery.”

Following Israel’s announcement of closing all crossings into Gaza on Saturday, Palestinians had no choice but to hoard supplies of food and other essential commodities.

“We are afraid of not finding milk for the kids or (diapers) for the kids like last time. And not find food and water,” said Hassan Zanoun, who was displaced from Rafah.

The impact of the regional conflict that erupted Saturday when the U.S. and Israel launched attacks on Iran was immediately felt across the Gaza Strip.

Abeer Awwad, who was displaced from Gaza City, said that once they heard the news of war, “all people were scared of the famine. All the people rushed to markets, and they all wanted to shop and hide.”
