On August 19, 2021 we tackled Mt. Whitney! We did the summit and back in one day - 22 miles and over 6,000 feet elevation gain from the trailhead to the summit. The route we took was by way of the Mount Whitney Trail, which starts at Whitney Portal, at an elevation of 8,360 ft. We started at 3:18AM and the first group reached the summit at 10:35AM. Last group made it back to the trailhead at 6:15PM after 15 hours on the trail!
Mount Whitney is the highest mountain in the contiguous United States at 14,505 feet. The mountain's west slope is in Sequoia National Park and the summit is the southern terminus of the John Muir Trail, which runs 211.9 mi from Happy Isles in Yosemite Valley.
