The Spiritual Resurrection
A sermon by Charles Spurgeon
Based on John 11:43–44 – Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth! And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with grave clothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, Loose him, and let him go.

In this powerful and searching sermon, Spurgeon moves from the literal raising of Lazarus to the deeper and more urgent reality of spiritual resurrection. He unfolds the great Christian doctrine of the resurrection of the body, but then presses the text home to the conscience: every soul by nature lies in a tomb of spiritual death, corrupt and powerless, until the sovereign voice of Christ calls it into life. With vivid imagery—burning rooftops, rushing rapids, and the immense catacomb of unconverted hearts—Spurgeon exposes the sinner’s helplessness while magnifying the instantaneous, life-giving power of Jesus.

Yet he does not stop there. Even when Christ has spoken life, the believer often emerges still wrapped in grave clothes—old habits, lingering sins, remnants of unbelief. In pastoral tenderness, Spurgeon reminds the struggling saint that the same Christ who calls forth from the grave will one day say, Loose him, and let him go. This sermon is both a solemn warning and a glorious hope: Christ still speaks, still quickens, still frees.
