Unbinding Lazarus
A sermon by Charles Spurgeon
Based on John 11:43–44 – Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth! And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with grave clothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, Loose him, and let him go.

In this powerful and pastoral sermon, Charles Spurgeon unfolds the raising of Lazarus as both a display of Christ’s sovereign power and a living picture of spiritual resurrection. He shows how the Lord alone calls the dead to life, yet graciously invites His people to share in the tender work of unbinding those whom He has saved. The miracle at Bethany becomes a portrait of conversion: sinners quickened by divine grace, yet still wrapped in doubts, fears, ignorance, and old habits that must be gently removed.

Spurgeon presses home the privilege and responsibility of believers to loose the grave clothes of new converts—teaching them, comforting them, guiding them into liberty, and clothing them with the promises of Christ. With vivid illustration and warm exhortation, he reminds the church that while Christ alone raises the dead, He delights to associate His servants with Himself in the joyful labor of restoration. This sermon is both a celebration of sovereign grace and a call to active, loving service in the kingdom of God.
